Wisdom Teeth Removal in Albuquerque

Compassionate Care from Your Albuquerque Family Dentists

You probably know someone who has had at least one wisdom tooth removed. These molars (called wisdom teeth or third molars) are in the very back of our mouths and are the last adult teeth to erupt. Our mouths commonly have insufficient room for them, which means painful symptoms can develop and extraction is likely necessary.

Tooth extraction may sound scary but for our experienced Albuquerque dentists, it's a routine procedure patients can feel confident about. If you are experiencing impacted wisdom tooth symptoms – which can range from simple discomfort to decay in the adjacent tooth – Dental House is ready to hear from you. Our office is ready to assess your wisdom teeth and recommend the best course of action.

When Do Wisdom Teeth Come In?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically begin to emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. However, the exact timing can vary widely from person to person. Some individuals may see their wisdom teeth erupt earlier or later, while others may never develop them at all.

In many cases, there is not enough space in the mouth to accommodate these extra molars. When this occurs, the wisdom teeth can become impacted, meaning they do not fully emerge or grow in at an angle. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to discomfort, infection, or damage to nearby teeth. For this reason, dental professionals closely monitor their development through regular exams and X-rays, typically beginning in the mid-teen years.

Early evaluation is important because it allows for proactive planning. If removal is recommended, it is generally easier and results in a quicker recovery when performed before the roots are fully developed. Most oral surgeons suggest addressing wisdom teeth issues during the late teens or early twenties to prevent future complications.

Understanding Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth (or third molars) are the final adult molars to erupt at the very back of our mouths, usually in our late teens to mid-twenties. Since it is common for our mouths not to have room for these teeth, they can remain impacted (embedded in our gums and/or pressing against the second molar). When this occurs, patients can start to experience symptoms.

Common impacted wisdom tooth symptoms include:

  • Pain (gums, jaw, etc.)
  • Bleeding gums
  • Swelling around the jaw
  • Headaches
  • Bad breath

In some cases, patients may not be experiencing symptoms but can start to feel their wisdom teeth protruding from their gums at the back of their mouth. All of these are signs that it's time to have a conversation with your dentist about your wisdom teeth. Left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to gum disease, unwanted movement in your other teeth, and worsening symptoms.

    Comprehensive Oral Surgical Services

Wisdom tooth removal is a common form of oral surgery and while many general dentists do not perform third molar extractions, at Dental House, we do. Our experienced dentists stay at the forefront of dental medicine and are capable of performing an array of different procedures to meet the needs of our patients. While some cases may need to be sent out to specialists, most surgical procedures are done in-house, keeping our patients in a familiar, comfortable environment.
